designer and author Timothy J. Alberts pays homage to the brilliant 18th century
arbiter of taste, Madame de Pompadour, in an example of the Rococo style of
dress she made so popular. Pompadour Cissy's ensemble begins with the basic
undergarment, the chemise. Over the chemise a lingerie style petticoat is worn.
The next layer is a boned corset, which defines the shape of the torso. The
petite panier is put on after the corset. A dress petticoat is worn over the
panier and is used to fill out the silhouette and soften the edges of the panier.
The underskirt, placed over the dress petticoat, is profusely decorated in
coordination with the gown. Finally, the gown is placed over the layers of
underclothes to complete the stage of dressing. Her shoes are mule style, which
emphasized a women's station in life and wealth. Completing the ensemble, Cissy
has been given a lined, plum velvet, hooded cape, which is edged in fur and
accompanied by a dainty fur muff. |
