The romance and adventurous spirit of the
Old West are captured in Madame Alexander's new limited
edition Baby Doe Cissy. Talented designer Doug James
interprets the timeless true love story of Elizabeth
Bonduel McCourt "Baby" Doe Tabor, a tragic American
heroine immortalized in the Douglas Moore opera, "The
Ballad of Baby Doe". Born into a poor family, "Baby" Doe
worked in the Leadville, Colorado "Matchless" Silver Mine,
owned by Horace Tabor, a married man with whom she began a
torrid affair. In contravention of the social mores of the
day, the lovers eventually, divorced their respective
spouses and, though fabulously wealthy, still endured the
stigma of being social pariahs. The divorce ended Horace's
political aspirations, and the change from a Silver
standard to Gold standard left them penniless. Staying
true to her husband's last wishes that she never sell the
now worthless "Matchless" Mine, Baby Doe died desolate and
impoverished in a cabin not far from that fateful place,
but remained true to her love until the very end. Doug James presents Baby Doe Cissy at the
height of her beauty and wealth in a stunning 1880's
day-suit. Her foundation garments include a white cotton
union suit with white satin ribbon straps and bows beneath
a lacy, ruffled pale blue cotton petticoat. She wears a
tailored asymmetrical jacket of burnished gold dutchess
satin secured by pearl buttons. A band of blue, taupe and
mustard linen plaid borders the collar and cuffs and an
ivory lace scarf is tucked in between the buttons on the
bodice. The bustled skirt is made of the same blue linen
plaid and features a short train embellished with blue and
taupe fringe and a similarly-fringed front apron drape
attached to the back of her skirt beneath the jacket.
A gold locket with a picture of Baby Doe's
beloved suspended from a gold bow on her chest is a fine
contextual detail. A small rose-colored velvet coin purse
with a gold ring clasp is worn on a gold chain around her
shoulder and waist. A taupe brocade flower-trimmed bonnet
is trimmed with pink and blue roses and ivory ruched lace
along the brim. A fringe of tight strawberry blond curls
rests on her forehead, and ringlets trail down her back.
She wears simple gold filigree ball studs in her ears, and
light brown suede high-top, lace-up boots on her feet.
Baby Doe also comes complete with a coordinating gold silk
parasol with a bamboo shaft and faux coral handle and an
intricate antique gold frame with a black and white
picture of the original "Baby" Doe Tabor.
