The Atlanta Bazaar
|
Scarlett, an untimely widow due to the death of her first husband, Charles
Hamilton, journeys to Atlanta to stay with Melanie and Aunt Pittypat. While in
Atlanta she bemoans the fact that she has to wear mourning and never has any
fun. Melanie and Scarlett volunteer to work one of the booths at a charity
bazaar and dance to benefit the Glorious Confederate Boys in Grey. Rhett Butler,
now known as a gun runner from Charleston, arrives at the bazaar and sees
Scarlett. His derisive comments embarrass her and she rebuffs his attentions. To
prove that Scarlett is indeed interested in him, Rhett forces her hand by
bidding for her as a dance partner. Dr. Mead tells Rhett that Scarlett is a
widow and therefore will not dance with him. Scarlett, in a bold and impulsive
moment, yells above the crowd, "Oh, yes I will!" Aunt Pittipat
collapses in horror. The crowd is scandalized, Rhett smiles knowingly. Scarlett
and Rhett dance the night away.

MRS. MERRIWETHER:
She did!

Oh dear, oh dear. Where are my smelling salts? I think I shall
faint.
MRS. MERRIWETHER:

it's all right, it is all right.

LEVI:
Choose yo' partners for the Virginia Reel.
SCARLETT and RHETT as they meet. They back away from each other to get
in position for the reel.
RHETT:
We've sort of shocked the Confederacy, Scarlett.
SCARLETT:
It's a little bit like blockade running, isn't it?
RHETT:
It's worse. But I expect a very fancy profit out of it.
SCARLETT:
Oh, I don't care what you expect or what they think. I'm going to
dance and dance. Tonight I wouldn't mind dancing with Abe Lincoln himself. |
