Gone with the Wind

The Atlanta Bazaar

Scarlett, an untimely widow due to the death of her first husband, Charles Hamilton, journeys to Atlanta to stay with Melanie and Aunt Pittypat. While in Atlanta she bemoans the fact that she has to wear mourning and never has any fun. Melanie and Scarlett volunteer to work one of the booths at a charity bazaar and dance to benefit the Glorious Confederate Boys in Grey. Rhett Butler, now known as a gun runner from Charleston, arrives at the bazaar and sees Scarlett. His derisive comments embarrass her and she rebuffs his attentions. To prove that Scarlett is indeed interested in him, Rhett forces her hand by bidding for her as a dance partner. Dr. Mead tells Rhett that Scarlett is a widow and therefore will not dance with him. Scarlett, in a bold and impulsive moment, yells above the crowd, "Oh, yes I will!" Aunt Pittipat collapses in horror. The crowd is scandalized, Rhett smiles knowingly. Scarlett and Rhett dance the night away.

DR. MEADE:
Gentlemen, if you wish to lead the opening reel with the lady of our choice, you must bid for her.

M.S. Group of guests at Bazaar - laughing and cheering.

Dr. Meade asks the gentlemen to bid for their partners in the next dance.

This shocks the ladies at the bazaar

MRS. MERRIWETHER:
Caroline Meade, how can you permit your husband to conduct this - this slave auction.

MRS. MEADE:
Dolly Merriwether, how dare you criticize me. Melanie Wilkes told the doctor that if it's for the benefit of the cause it's quite all right.

MRS. MERRIWETHER:
She did!

AUNT PITTYPAT:
Oh dear, oh dear. Where are my smelling salts? I think I shall faint.

MRS. MERRIWETHER:
Don't you dare faint, Pittypat Hamilton. If Melanie says it's all right, it is all right.

AUNT PITTYPAT:
Oh...

DR. MEADE:
Come, gentlemen, do I hear your bids? Make your offers.

DR. MEADE:
Don't be bashful, gentlemen.

RENEE PICARD and MAYBELLE MERRIWETHER in crowd.

RENEE PICARD:
Twenty dollars - twenty dollars for miss Maybelle Merriwether.

OFFICER and FANNIE ELSING in crowd.

OFFICER:
Twenty- five dollars from Miss Fanny Elsing.

RHETT walking through crowd.

DR. MEADE:
Only twenty-five dollars to give your...

RHETT:
One hundred and fifty dollars in gold.

DR. MEADE:
For what lady, sir?

RHETT:
For Mrs. Charles Hamilton

Crowd shooting over DR. MEADE. RHETT is walking toward camera.

DR. MEADE:
Mrs. Hamilton is in mourning, Captain Butler, but I'm sure any of our Atlanta belles would be proud to -

RHETT:
Dr. Meade, I said Mrs. Charles Hamilton.

DR. MEADE:
She will not consider it, sir.

SCARLETT:
Oh yes, I will.

Crowd shooting over DR. MEADE toward RHETT. They all turn toward SCARLETT

SCARLETT - she lifts booth entrance and starts towards RHETT.

LEVI on musicians' platform.

LEVI:
Choose yo' partners for the Virginia Reel.

SCARLETT and RHETT as they meet. They back away from each other to get in position for the reel.

RHETT:
We've sort of shocked the Confederacy, Scarlett.

SCARLETT:
It's a little bit like blockade running, isn't it?

RHETT:
It's worse. But I expect a very fancy profit out of it.

SCARLETT:
Oh, I don't care what you expect or what they think. I'm going to dance and dance. Tonight I wouldn't mind dancing with Abe Lincoln himself.

Rhett and Scarlett meet to begin the Reel

Rhett and Scarlett lead the dance

RHETT and SCARLETT and dancers. The dancers step toward each other, curtsy. The dancers step back and RHETT dances down between the lines to meet partner, swings her and dances back. SCARLETT repeats the routine. SCARLETT and RHETT dance down between the line dancers.
