| Olivia de Havilland wanted the role of Melanie
Hamilton Wilkes. She was a contract player with Warner
Brothers. She read for the part at George Cukor's office, and he
suggested that she read the part for Selznick. Several days later,
she replayed the same scene in Selznick's house with Cukor playing the
role of Scarlett. Selznick was impressed and offered her the role of
Melanie. Jack Warner's response was "NO" when she
approached him about taking the part. Rather than accept Warner's
response as the final word, the determined Olivia appealed to someone who
could change the boss's mind - his wife. Mrs. Warner, a former
actress, was sympathetic to Olivia's plight and soon Jack Warner agreed.
As part of the deal for de Havilland, Selznick agreed to lend new star
Jimmy Stewart for use in the new Warner film - No Time for Comedy. |
