Not just a Baseball Park

Not all of the memorable moments in Yankee Stadium history revolved around baseball and the Yankees. Here are some non-baseball milestones:

Pro Football

bullet1956 - 1973  New York Giants Football Games
bulletDec 28, 1958 The Baltimore Colts beat the Giants, 24-17, in overtime for the 1958 NFL championship. It has been called the greatest NFL game ever played.
bullet1964 - Y.A. Tittle played his final game with the Giants in 1964
bullet1973 - Giants play their last game at the Stadium

Religious/World Leaders

bullet1950's - The annual Jehovah's Witnesses convention was held at the Stadium, and drew as many as 123,707 in a day.
bulletJuly 20, 1957 - The Rev. Billy Graham preached at the Stadium.
bulletDec 12, 1957 - Cardinal Spellman celebrated Mass
bulletOct. 4, 1965 - Pope Paul VI celebrated Mass as part of the first papal visit to North America.
bulletOct. 2, 1969 - Pope John Paul II preached about helping the poor during Mass on his first visit to New York as pope.
bulletOct. 7, 1979 - Third papal visit by Pope John Paul II.
bulletJune 21, 1990 - Nelson Mandela is welcomed at the Stadium .

bullet1920's - 1930's - Fordham vs Pittsburgh Football Games
bullet1925-46 - Notre Dame vs Army Football Games
bulletNov. 11, 1928 - Knute Rockne gives his Notre Dame team a stirring pep talk before its win over Army. The talk would later be immortalized in a film, and called the ``Win one for the Gipper'' speech.
bullet1968 - 1987 Grambling played 18 annual games at the Stadium.
