| THE YANKEE TRADITIONIn the beginning . . .they were the "Highlanders". They were called this because of the location of the club's ballpark "Hilltop Park" - an elevated parcel of land in Manhattan's Washington Heights section. The name was changed to the Yankees in 1913 and they began playing their home games in the Polo Grounds - home of the National League New York Giants. In 1920, Babe Ruth played his inaugural season as a Yankee - "and the rest they say - is History" In 1920, the Yankees surpassed the one million mark for the first time in Club history. Attendance was 1,289,422 - double the previous year's total. With Ruth in the lineup, the team began winning, and winning a lot through the 1920's and 1930's. Even after Ruth was traded in 1935, the team kept on winning. Through the years the Yankees kept finding great players to fill the roster and play as a team. The Yankees have always had "SuperStars", but they have won as a Team. No team in baseball history has commanded more fear, and loathing than the Yankees. In 1921, they won their first American League pennant - their First of Many. Important Dates in Yankee History
