1976
New York Yankees vs. Cincinnati Reds
Cincinnati wins the Series 4-0
The Cincinnati Reds returned to the World Series for the second consecutive year in
1976 to face the New York Yankees. The Reds' Don Gullett combined with Pedro Borbon to
hold down the Yankees 5-1 in Game 1. Game 2 was a close contest throughout. The score was
tied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Fred Stanley's throwing error sent the
Reds' Ken Griffey to second base. The Yankees intentionally walked Joe Morgan, then Tony
Perez reached Catfish Hunter for a game-winning RBI single.
Pat Zachry and Will McEnaney teamed up on the mound to down the Yankees 6-2 in Game 3.
The Reds took a 3-2 lead into the ninth in the Game 4, then Johnny Bench blasted a
three-run homer. The Reds went on to win 7-2, and Bench ended the Series with a .533
batting average and six RBI as the Reds won their second consecutive World Series.

1977
New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Yankees win the Series 4-2
The Yankees returned to the World Series in 1977, this time against a Dodgers club that
started off the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning of Game 1, and the
Yankees responded with one run in their half of the inning. The Yankees went ahead with a
run in the sixth and another in the eighth. The Dodgers tied the game in the ninth against
Yankee relief ace Sparky Lyle to send the game to extra frames. The Yankees won in the
12th, when Randolph doubled, then scored on Paul Blair's single.
Burt Hooton tossed a five-hitter for a 6-1 Dodgers' victory in Game 2. Mike Torrez went
the distance for the Yankees in Game 3 for a 5-3 win. Ron Guidry pitched the Yankees to a
four-hit, 4-2 in Game 4, but the Dodgers responded with a 10-4 win in Game 5 to stay
alive.
Reggie Jackson took over in Game 6. He lined a two-run homer in the bottom of the
fourth to put the Yankees ahead 4-3. He followed with another two-run homer in the next
frame, and yet another home run in the eighth as the Yankees wrapped up the World
Championship with a score of 8-4 in the final game.

1978
New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Yankees win the Series 4-2
The New York Yankees started slowly against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1978 World
Series. Davey Lopes homered twice and drove in five runs to give the Dodgers the 11-5 win
in Game 1. Ron Cey's three-run homer gave the Dodgers a 4-3 lead in Game 2. With the
go-ahead runs on base, rookie Bob Welch fanned Reggie Jackson to complete the win.
Ron Guidry put the Yankees on the winning track with a complete-game 5-1 victory in
Game 3, with help from several impressive defensive plays by Graig Nettles. In the sixth
inning of Game 4, Bill Russell's potential inning-ending throw to first hit Jackson in the
leg and rolled into right field. The Dodgers argued that Jackson had interfered, but they
were overruled. The Yankees ultimately won on a single by Lou Piniella in the 10th inning.
The Yankees broke out in Game 5 with 12 runs, five by Thurman Monson, as Jim Beattie
went the distance for the win. Catfish Hunter sealed the World Series title for the
Yankees with a 7-2 win in Game 6.
